When is an iron infusion right for you?
When oral iron supplements fail to raise levels or cause side effects you can’t handle, an iron infusion may be appropriate. It skips digestion entirely, delivering iron straight into your bloodstream for maximum absorption.
Medical providers often turn to infusions when patients don’t respond to pills or patches, or when faster correction is needed.
So why does a patient have iron deficiency?
This type of anemia is caused due to your body’s inability to absorb or properly use iron or when you have a chronic condition interfering with blood loss or production.
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Pregnant or postpartum and need quick iron restoration
Digestive disorders such as Crohn’s or Celiac
Chronic kidney disease or heart failure
Preparing for surgery and need a normal hemaglobin level
Feel tired or weak even after months of oral supplements
Cannot tolerate pills
How to recognize patients that may be iron deficient
Foggy brain
Short of breath with exertion
Cold hands
Brittle nails
Hair thinning
Restless legs at night
Pale skin
Fast heartbeat
Low ferritin, hemoglobin and iron saturation levels
How do I prepare for an iron infusion?
Make sure you are well hydrated and have eaten a light meal prior to arrival
Avoid iron supplementation the day of treatment
Check with the office medical provider concerning your current medications and discuss whether you should take them prior to treatment.
What to expect during and after your infusion
Infusions can last 15 minutes to a few hours depending on chosen formulation
Older formulations may need a test dose to assess tolerance or allergic reaction
You may notice a slight metallic taste in your mouth that resolves
Mild fatigue the day of infusion
Light headedness or dizziness when not well-hydrated
What can I expect over the next several weeks to months?
Patients have reported improvements within the first few days, but the progression usually starts with a lift in energy and brain fog. Then comes the focus, stamina and energy by the end of the month. You may notice warmer hands and feet. Improvement in hair and nails can also be reported.
Results can last 6 months to a year and are individualized. This can be monitored by our medical providers and in-house lab around 2-4 weeks post treatment then quarterly.
A medical visit from one of our providers will be required prior to infusion.
